Kevin G’s Weekly Metal Playlist

Today is a(nother) dark fucking day for America. There’s going to be a fight ahead of us as the next four years are going to strenuous, tedious, stupefying, and repulsive to be sure. I won’t diminish or minimize  what the outcome of our new “president” will mean for so many people but even in dark times, we have music. It’s always there for us and it’s going to need to be there for this fucking ride.

Full on into 2017 releases with some 2016 releases rounding out this week. Let’s fucking do this.

2017 NEW RELEASES: (Click the titles)

Dumal – The Lesser God
American black metal band heavily inspired by the older Scandinavian flavor of the music. Some Swedish style melody with some Norwegian style atmospherics and keyboards, and even Continue reading “Kevin G’s Weekly Metal Playlist”

Album Review: Morgue Whore/Skeið Split

You need some Morgue Whore. The Denver heavy-death metal trio released their debut album at the beginning of 2016, played some shows and pumped out a new split with Denver’s trio of raw barbarian black fuckin’ metal, Skeið. The Mile High has plenty of albums to come in 2017, Morgue Whore & Skeið scored an opening shot on the year.

The six-track split opens with four badass songs from Morgue Whore that is a sequel to their self-titled debut. Of the four, “Ov Doomed Gods” and “Ritual Dismemberment” go over the best, both off their first album. Continue reading “Album Review: Morgue Whore/Skeið Split”

Kevin G’s Weekly Metal Playlist

2017 is off and running (and already in last place) and finally some new metal is trickling in. Every year I keep a list of upcoming releases that I’m interested in and from January through April, so far, there’s going to be a mega fuck ton of killer albums. I’m looking forward to the year in metal and I’m glad it’s starting to form now.

Still kicking around some 2016 releases, the year that just doesn’t seem to want to leave. So much good stuff I missed but I’ve got to draw the line somewhere so I’m going full in to 2017 and will continue to pick at 2016 when stuff pops back up. So let’s fucking do this:

NEW STUFF 2017 STYLE: (Click those titles)

Panphage – Drengskapr

Yes, this technically came out in 2016 but my pre-orded cd copy didn’t show up until this Continue reading “Kevin G’s Weekly Metal Playlist”

30 Years Ago Today – A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors

Everyone knows the razor clawed, burnt killer Freddy Krueger and if you’ve seen all of the A Nightmare on Elm Street series, the third installment is easily the best sequel. The first ANOES is a classic, we’re introduced to Krueger, we learn how he became the burnt killer that torments the dreams of the children of Springwood, especially the kids of Elm Street. The second movie, ANOES 2: Freddy’s Revenge, is a contentious hot topic among horror/slasher fans.

It has its fans and it has its critics, I don’t really care for it.

Then came ANOES 3: Dream Warriors, the movie that truly set the tone (for better or for worse) for the rest of the series. 30 years ago today, we got to see a group of troubled, institutionalized Continue reading “30 Years Ago Today – A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors”

Pet (2016)

Working within the horror genre is often a tricky endeavor. As someone who screens movies on a regular basis, I get to see hundreds of films and on average I see between 2-300 a year. That’s a pretty heavy undertaking for even the most seasoned of viewers. When I worked at a video store in my younger days, I used to rent EVERY single horror film that came through the door. My friends and co-workers used to ask me how I could suffer through so much nonsense. My reply: “1 out of 10 is superb, so good that it makes the 9 other bad ones worth it”. I’m sorry to say that with the more recent popularity of the horror genre, that number has gotten closer to 1 Continue reading “Pet (2016)”

Album Review: Call of the Void – AYFKM

Yeah, this one is a bit late but if you haven’t heard Call of the Void‘s new album AYFKM you may as well be better late than never.

The intro for “Get in the Van” is three minutes of just heavy shit before Alex Pace opens his mouth and shouts your face off. That track grabs you by the neck and shakes your face. The rest of AYFKM really doesn’t deviate from that.

I’m glad somebody mentioned Call of the Void to me last year when I missed them on my Colorado metal releases. I even wrote a follow up post because Ageless was aggressive and Continue reading “Album Review: Call of the Void – AYFKM”

Kevin G’s Weekly Metal Playlist

The first week of the new year everybody is claiming and hoping to be better than the last. I hold no such hopes so we’ll need all the metal we can get in 2017. Speaking of, I’ve got no new metal for this year as of now. Yeah, it’s always a slow fucking start every year. That should be rectified next week.

So this is what I was mostly listening to before the holiday break. I was scouring best of lists and finding some nuggets here and there. This list has a lot of non-metal releases on it too as that’s what I was mostly finding I missed out on in 2016. So, here we fucking go.

LEFT OVER 2016 JAMS: (As always, click the damn titles to hear music)

Will Varley – Kingsdown Sundown
Just some well composed, well written, singer/songwriter stuff that I’m a sucker for. His voice Continue reading “Kevin G’s Weekly Metal Playlist”
