The Best of 2016 Colorado Metal with Kevin and Mister Samhain

Whether it was a brewery hosted metal show or an album release party, there was plenty to see and do in the Denver metal scene this year. But getting people to a show requires music, and the local acts of Colorado turned out plenty by themselves in 2016. Singles, demos, splits, EPs and full-lengths, the Mile High saw plenty of releases across numerous sub-genres.

Whether you were looking forward to KhemmisAbsolution follow up, Hunted, or discovered new acts like Vourdalak through one of their two releases, Kevin and I (Mister Samhain) had plenty to discuss while collaborating on our best of 2016 Colorado metal list.

The first of which, who would be number one?

  1. Blood Incantation – Starspawn

There was some debate at #1 and #2, but we came to an agreement that Blood Incantation took what they did on their 2015 EP Interdimensional Extinction and went even further on Starspawn. “They got more progressive with their sound,” Kevin said and I’m inclined to give the nod to Blood Incantation based on that. You really can hear they added a bit more to their cosmic death metal sound on Starspawn and it really kicked it up. This is just an expansive work of old school, plodding death metal that rightfully got plenty of love on year end lists. Andy’s Best Of 2016 Horror List

It’s that time of year again…the horrible holiday music filled with fake cheer and obligatory gift giving. Cynical you say? I’m not a huge fan of December in general. However, what better way to offset the phony holiday spirit with a nice collection of year-end horror films. 2016 was not necessarily a landmark year for horror, but it isn’t without its gems. Here is my end of the year “best of” list.

This is a film that I’ve already written about in a lengthy review. It has almost everything one Continue reading “Andy’s Best Of 2016 Horror List”

Mister Samhain’s Top 25 Metal Albums of 2016 (No. 1-No. 10)

Now I’ll wrap up the awesome year in metal with the top 10 from my Top 25 Metal Albums of 2016 list. I can’t listen to everything, but I try to keep my ear low to the ground through Bandcamp and social media, so excuse me for all the supposed egregious albums missing.

I was really looking forward to some of these, Vektor’s Terminal Redux and Behexen’s The Poisonous Path being a couple, and they didn’t come close to disappointing. Whether it was local to Denver (Khemmis, Blood Incantation + more) or came all the way to us from Finland or Chile (Behexen, Ripper), 2016 had tons of offerings from the world of metal.

Get loaded on these albums.

10. Ripper – Experiment of Existence (CHL)

Thrash has become one of those sub-genres that has become filled with a lot of retro Continue reading “Mister Samhain’s Top 25 Metal Albums of 2016 (No. 1-No. 10)”

Album Review: Of Feather and Bone – Promotional Demo 2016

Of Feather and Bone is the kind of band I want to listen to if I feel the need to just be yelled at. This is shut the fuck up music. The grind-death-whatever set from Denver is going to crack you across the face with a set of long form grind songs and their newest two-track demo is more of that same good shit.

Sidebar, I love seeing a band release EPs, splits and a debut LP, and then hit everyone with a demo. I don’t know, it’s just funny to me as far as categorizing what a release is goes. The title is also very descriptive: a demo from the year 2016, purposed for promotional uses.

Kevin G’s Top 25 Albums of 2016

2016 will go down as a mother fucker of a year, however one of the shining lights in the dark has been metal. As the year crawled by and we saw things just get worse and worse, metal was there for us. It gave unrelentingly all year in both quantity and quality, and the quality was fucking immense.

I labored over this list since Oct/Nov. this list could have easily been 24 other albums (I’m not moving on my #1 album) and been just as vital, just as memorable, and just as inspiring. Metal, more so the musicians who make make it, upped the ante yet again and this year provided, again, some of the best music my ears have ever taken in. It’s truly the Continue reading “Kevin G’s Top 25 Albums of 2016”

Mister Samhain’s Top 25 Metal Albums of 2016 (No. 11- No. 25)

The time has come for me to crown the following bands -with the absolute legitimacy this .wordpress blog carries- within this list as the Top 25 Metal Albums of 2016. This year was another great one in metal with so many rad releases and exciting returns for some bands to show they can still shred and make us bang our heads.

I would’ve loved to have done a longer list, but I’m afraid if you’re here that you wouldn’t stick around for over 50+ albums, so 25 seemed a good number … well 30 if you count my Honorable Mentions section at the bottom for the albums that were “on the bubble.” Here’s No. 11 – No. 25.

25. Serpentine Dominion – Serpentine Dominion (USA)

Metal super team, assemble! George Corpsegrinder headlines this three piece. I am Continue reading “Mister Samhain’s Top 25 Metal Albums of 2016 (No. 11- No. 25)”

Mister Samhain’s Top 20 EPs, Demos & Splits of 2016 (No. 1 – No. 10)

After a Colorado dominated back 10 of my Top 20 EPs, Demos & Splits, the final 10 are here with a heavier Canadian flavor. As always, links to Bandcamp are in the titles (except for one) so go and support these guys. Numbers 1-10 of my Top 20 EPs, Demos and Splits of 2016:

10 . Dopethrone/Fister – Split (CAN/USA)

Get your sludge a little on the stoney side. This split is a perfect pairing of two dirty sounding bands that play a slightly similar style. I prefer the Dopethrone “Host” a bit Continue reading “Mister Samhain’s Top 20 EPs, Demos & Splits of 2016 (No. 1 – No. 10)”

Mister Samhain’s Top 20 EPs, Demos & Splits of 2016 (No. 11- No. 20)

It’s that time of year again, year end lists are here! I’ve expanded beyond my Top Albums and Top Colorado Albums lists to include Top EPs, Demos and Splits. I feel it is unfair to stack up a local two song demo against a full length, plus who doesn’t like extra lists of metal they may have missed? The links in the titles go to Bandcamp, they all range from $10 to Name Your Price (FREE!) so either way hook these guys up.

*I can’t listen to every thing, that’s what these lists are all about, letting others cull for you so you don’t have to do it all yourself. This is not an all encompassing list, just the Top 20 of what I actually heard.

20. The Munsens – Abbey Rose (USA)

The Munsens have dealt us another EP, though at 40 minutes it may as well be an LP. This one keeps the stoner/doom/rock thing going from their previous two releases. The title Continue reading “Mister Samhain’s Top 20 EPs, Demos & Splits of 2016 (No. 11- No. 20)”

Kevin G’s Weekly Metal Playlist

Holy crap, it’s been a few weeks since I’ve done my weekly list. It’s partly because most of November was a bit bare on the new release front, and because of the Thanksgiving holiday here in the states. Last week proved to be insanely jam packed with new metal and this week was no fucking slouch either.

We’re gearing up for “best of” season and like always I’ll be posting my picks for the year so I’ll be devoting more time to that and with the Holidays coming up, vacations and what not I’ll do my best to stay on top of the site otherwise, but it might be sparse until the new year. But for now, here’s a three weeks worth of metal jams!

NEW STUFF: (Better click those titles)

Mavradoxa – Sojourners
Just a look at the cover of this album gives you a pretty good idea of what it’s going to sound like. Moonsorrow/Agalloch, nature oriented atmospheric black metal, and yeah, it’s totally that, but with some post flairs thrown in on top. Good if you’re into this sort of mostly mid-paced, atmospheric black metal. Continue reading “Kevin G’s Weekly Metal Playlist”
