Professor Hops

India-style Saison

Odd13 Brewing (Lafayette, CO)

7.2% ABV

Kvlt Rating: 3.5 out of 5

North of Denver -in the relative nowhere of Lafayette- is a special brewery, Odd13, that not only has really good, original beers, but also fantastic comic book style labels. I am a sucker for cool label art and as someone who grew up with comics, I can appreciate the work that went into them.

Professor Hops is an IPA with a twist. They went Belgian and Brett with this one and it’s not too bad of an idea. From the 22 oz. bottle it pours a golden straw color with a clean, thin white head.

It has that piney, citric IPA smell that’s bit bready with a slight hint of banana coming from the other half of this mash up.

It tastes like an IPA with a touch of grapefruit. I’m no grapefruit fan, but this is certainly tolerable to since it’s predominantly IPA. It was going to be a bit bitter anyways, so the grapefruit just adds some character to the finish.

On the finish you can taste alcohol and that slightly tart/sour grapefruit flavor.

From their website:

“PROFESSOR HOPS IS AN INDIA-STYLE SAISON, PALE IN COLOR. HE BLENDS PUNGENT HOPS WITH UNIQUE BELGIAN YEAST THAT IMPART HERBAL AND CITRUS FLAVORS. A HINT OF BRETTANOMYCES ROUNDS OUT THE FLAVOR, AND CAUSES THE BEER TO EVOLVE CONTINUOUSLY AS IT AGES.”

Not my favorite beer from them, that’d have to go to their killer Humulus Kalecumber, but if you like IPAs or Belgians, I’d give it a go.

Three jams while drinking Professor Hops:

Fourth Seal – “Track I” from Book XIV

Danzig – “Tired of Being Alive” from Danzig II – Lucifuge

Dark Angel – “Never to Rise Again” from Leave Scars
